Munich not only has a lot going for it in the city itself, but it also has the added bonus of being perfectly placed to discover the Alps and beyond. The number of interesting, adventurous and exciting day trips to be had is simply endless – and having lived here for nearly 5 years I still haven't got anywhere near close to exhausting the list. The true beauty of Munich day trips though, is that they can all be enjoyed with the ease of the German public transport system, which is not only extensive and efficient but reasonably priced as well (great for solo travellers, particularly those who can't drive...like me!). Here are my Top 10 day trips from Munich to discover first:
1. NEUSCHWANSTEIN

The real life 'Disney Castle' – head up to the Marienbrücke for the best view.
2. CHIEMSEE

Take a boat trip out to the islands on the lake – the 'Men's', and the 'Women's'
3. LENGGRIES

Start at the river and either go hiking up one of the nearby hills, or on a rafting adventure!
4. PARTNACHKLAMM

Gaze upwards in awe as you walk through this impressive gorge.
5. SCHLOSSANLAGE SCHLEISSHEIM

Another impressive palace and grounds which can be found just on the outskirts of Munich.
6. STAFFELSEE

A great swimming lake – check out LIDO Beach & Burger in Murnau.
7. ANDECHS MONASTERY

Take a hike up from Ammersee up to Andechs abbey – sip a beer with this view before you.
8. WALCHENSEE

Well worth the train and bus journey, Walchensee's water is crystal clear.
9. SPITZINGSEE

Opt to go up the nearby gondola to the Rotwand, or e-bike around the lake.
10. SALZBURG

The cheap 'Bayern' train ticket will even take you all the way to Austria!
